AND WE'RE BACK

We are now currently staying in the mountains of Antigua, Guatemala.  We have rented a cute, little apartment for the next month.  We need some time to catch up on everything, relax and do some serious sightseeing.  This area has so much to see and experience and we want the time to take it all in.  It will also be nice to have a break from the road and the heat for awhile.  Really nice.

finally not a budget breaker - just $19 a day

Going without a computer has sucked but as of yesterday we are up and running again - thanks to our taxi driver, Armando.

There was no way that we were going to negotiate the sprawling, crime ridden streets of Guatemala city on our own so we arranged for a taxi to take us in and out of the city.  Our lives flashed before our eyes as chicken buses, mopeds and tuk tuks jockeyed for position.  There was an ongoing battle for the lead that our taxi always won at our extreme discomfort.

We found the service center and explained our problem (actually our cab driver did).  All the technician would say was no, no, no and three or four days (meaning weeks).  Once he actually saw what was wrong, his face dropped and we felt he was not the guy to fix our computer.  So defeated, we decided to break out the credit card and buy a new laptop.  Luckily, our taxi driver/translator was looking out for us and he called in el jefe.  The boss knew what was wrong immediately and said he could fix it - IN HOURS!  The problem turned out to be a crapped out hard drive that needed to be replaced.

So in the end, they were able to extract five of sixty-four g bytes of information.  Lucky again for us, in that five gigs we got back was the most important info we needed (and as well we have letters A to C titled albums back in our itunes library - ha.)

It turned out to be a good day.  Our awesome cabdriver saved us over a thousand dollars by being persistent and knowing how to make things happen with a smile on his face.  We like him a lot.

we don't understand why she insists on eating this way

So now that we have our laptop back we will go back in time and catch up on all our misadventures back in Belize.

  2. The weather here is great. It feels like a really warm fall in Alberta. Its wonderful to have a break from the heat, its one of the main reasons we're staying for so long. We think the electrical shower is dangerous too - its like having an electric tea kettle in the shower with you. No new stuff in the truck, we're just getting lazy!
